American Basketball Association- Year by Year Standings, Results and Statistics
The American Basketball Association was established in 1967. The league started its journey with eleven teams, located in Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Indianapolis, Kentucky, New Jersey, New Orleans, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Anaheim and Oakland. The teams were divided in to two divisions, with western division having an extra team. During a regular season, each team was scheduled to play 78 games. In later years, the regular season was expanded from 78 to 84 games. Top 4 teams from each division moved ahead to the divisional semifinals. The winners of the semifinals met in the divisional finals and then Eastern and Western division winners took on each other in the finals series.

In 1975-76 season, only nine teams left in the league. Two teams, San Diego Sails and Utah Stars managed to play only few games in the season and were folded before the season got finished. The league was on the verge of the demise when they decided to merge with the rival league, NBA. Four teams Denver Nuggets, New York Nets, San Antonio Spurs and Indiana Pacers were absorbed in the NBA, the remaining teams were disbanded prior to the absorption.
