In basketball, the risk of eye injury is very high; players often get cuts and bruises on the eyes and even poked in the eyes by the players. Still, they don’t take enough precautionary measures to prevent themselves from the eye injuries. Because of the negligence, the players get eye injuries time and again and some of those also turned out to be serious ones. Here, we take a look on the top 5 most horrible eye injury incidents ever occur on the basketball court.

    5. Steve Nash’s swollen eye

During a game against San Antonio Spurs, Steve Nash was elbowed by an opposing player Tim Duncan. He had taken the blow right under the eyebrow, fortunately missing the eye by a fraction of margin. With the blood pouring down from the cut, he returned to the locker room, where he was given the first aid. He had six stitches on the injured eye. He came back to the court very shortly with one completely shut swollen eye and he could barely see the action, in front of him.

    4. Amare Stoudemire’s detached retina

Amare Stoudemire was a professional basketball player for the Phoenix Suns. In 2008-09 season, while playing a game against Los Angeles Clippers, he was hit hard in the eye by another player, the result was a serious one, a detached retina. It was not the first time he had suffered an eye injury; few months back he had a blow on the same eye, though it was not a serious one as it was turned out to be a torn iris. This time around, he underwent a surgery to repair retina and it took eight weeks to make him a return on the court.

    3. Jon Scheyer injured the eye’s optic nerve

While playing in NBA Summer League game in Las Vegas, Jon had a severe injury in his right eye; he was pocked by a player from Golden State team. He suffered a torn retina and a serious injury to the eye’s optic nerve. It was thought that the he might lose his eyesight completely but he went through a surgical treatment and returned to the court after having a full recovery.

    2. Eric Katenda blinded in one eye

Eric Katenda was a Notre dame Basketball recruit. During a pickup game, he suffered a dreadful injury when he was pocked in the eye by the fingers of another player. He was taken to the hospital immediately, after being hospitalized for few days; he was told that he would never regain his vision in the injured eye. He is now permanently blind in one eye and it seems to be a tragic end of a promising basketball career.

    1. Allan Ray’s eye popped out

Allen Ray’s eye injury was perhaps the most horrible and unusual injury ever witnessed in a basketball game. In 2006, while playing a college basketball game for Villanova, Allen was poked in the eyes by an opposing player.
