    FIBA(International Basketball Federation)is an independent association responsible for organizing international basketball competitions.

    The abbreviation FIBA came from French (Federation Internationale de Basketball Amatuer), the word amatuer was eliminated in 1989 when FIBA decided to remove distinction between professionals and amatuers and allowed every player to participate in the competitions authorized by FIBA,still letter A is a part of the abbreviation.This governing body was established on june 18, 1932 with 8 national federations under its subordination and those initial nations were Switzerland, Argentina, Romania, Czehoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia,Portugal. The head quarter was set up in Geneva, Switzerland. Leon Bouffard became the first president of  FIBA(1932-1948)and Renato William Jones was selected as the first  secretary  general of the association(1932-1976). On August 1,1936, basketball is played for the first time in Olympic games held in Berlin.

    Responsibilities of FIBA

    FIBA hosts world basketball championship both for men and woman after an interval of 4 years. The world championship for men was started on october 22, 1950, in Argentina. First world championship for woman was organized in Chile on march 7, 1953.

    Currently 213 national federations are the members of  FIBA,  Montenegro was the last one, entered in FIBA on August 2006. In 1989, the teams were inserted in 5 commissions Africa, Asia,  America, Europe and Oceania and further into zones. In 1956, the headquarters of FIBA was  shifted from Geneva to Munich  for a brief period than transferred back to Geneva, Switzerland in 2002.

    Yvan Mainini is the current president of FIBA, elected in 2010 and Patrick Baumann is on the post of secretary general since 1995.

    FIBA hall of fame was established in 1991, first induction ceremony was arranged in september 2oo7 on the occasion of 75th anniversary of  FIBA.
